NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. —
The body of 33-year-old Desiree Williams was found in 5300 block of South Atlantic Avenue, near Bottle Island Road just before 3 a.m. Wednesday
A driver with a revoked license arrested on charges of hitting and killing a New Smyrna Beach woman and leaving the scene has been arrested 18 times before, WFTV learned Wednesday.
At least one of the arrests was on suspicion of drunk driving.
Troopers said Jason Wilke hit and killed Desiree Williams, 33, Tuesday night on South Atlantic Avenue near a crosswalk.
Wilke is being held at the county jail.
A friend who met Williams the night before she died, Monica Robarge, said she is devastated and heartbroken that someone would leave the scene of the crash.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers spent much of Wednesday morning interviewing the suspect before booking him into jail Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators said Wilke just took off in his truck.
A Volusia County deputy found Wilke and the truck in his mother’s driveway, a short distance away from the scene.
Troopers charged him with leaving the scene of an accident and DUI manslaughter.
They said he was intoxicated and had a revoked license.
Wilke has a long history of arrests going back 13 years, including another DUI charge.
Friends of Williams, like Monica Robarge, said she was a fun person who worked two jobs as a server to make ends meet.
“I can’t believe somebody has the gall to leave her there, just to leave her there on the side of the road is horrible,” Robarge said.
