Port Orange, FL …..
A Port Orange man is under arrest after deputies said he stole luggage from airports in Florida and Georgia.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Michael Schmidt, 31, of Port Orange after they said he stole a suitcase off the luggage carousel at Daytona Beach International Airport.
Investigators said the suitcase contained $70,000 worth of surgical equipment.
Schmidt told deputies he accidentally picked up the bag from the luggage carousel but Delta Airlines said Schmidt didn’t check any luggage on his flight.
Deputies said Schmidt is also a suspect after luggage was stolen at a Georgia airport and a stolen garment bag at Daytona Daytona Beach International Airport on June 10.
Investigators said Scmidt is related to a retired Delta Airlines employee, which allows him to travel free on some Delta flights and that he stole the luggage to support his son and sick mother.
Schmidt was arrested by Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators Wednesday morning on two charges of grand theft and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on $40,000 bond.
