1 teen dead, two others hurt in Volusia County crash
VOLUSIA COUNTY —
One teenager was killed and two others injured in a crash Wednesday night in Volusia County.
The accident happened around 9 p.m. in the 200-block of West Halifax Avenue near Elleanore Street in Oak Hill.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says 17-year-old Austen Goodrich was driving a pick-up truck with three passengers and lost control of the vehicle which then skidded sideways into a ditch and came to rest on its side.
Goodrich was pronounced dead at the scene. The three passengers in the truck were Goodrich’s cousin. Deputies said Cody Goodrich, 16, and 17-year-old Breanna Wilson were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Wilson was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit and Goodrich was listed in stable condition in the ICU.
Investigators said the other passenger, 18-year-old Cheyenne Ellis, was the only passenger who was wearing a seat belt. She suffered minor injuries that did not require hospitalization.
The sheriff’s office said several open containers of alcohol were found in the vehicle and investigators are working to determine whether alcohol or excessive speed were factors in the crash.
