22-Year-Old Mother Charged After Son Hit By Car On US 1

Port Orange, FL – The mother of a 4-year-old boy is facing child neglect charges after he was run over earlier this morning by a vehicle on U.S. 1 in Port Orange.
22-year-old Kayla M. Geraty (2012 picture courtesy Volusia County Jail) is also under investigation by the Florida Department of Children & Families after the incident, according to the Port Orange Police Department.
P.O.P.D. Assistant Chief Wayne Miller says it all started around 9am Friday when they received a call saying a boy was hit by a vehicle on the 4500 block of Ridgewood Avenue, just south of the Dunlawton Avenue intersection.
Investigators say 18-year-old Brandon M. Fanizzi of South Daytona tried to swerve out of the way but struck the child with the front of a 1990 4-door Jaguar sedan as he drove southbound on U.S. 1 in the inside left lane.
Witnesses told police the little boy – who appeared to have been unsupervised at the time – was going in and out of the roadway before running eastbound onto U.S. 1 and directly into the path of the Jaguar.
The boy was transported from the scene to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach after suffering a broken leg and lacerations.
