Federal Lawsuit Against Halifax Hospital
On Wednesday, August 14th, Halifax Health started sharing the real story of what is behind the Federal Government’s $1 Billion lawsuit against the hospital. The Halifax Health Board of Commissioners and I want to share information with you, a leader in our community, regarding the potential impact of this outrageous lawsuit on your public safety net hospital, your constituents, and your entire community.
This lawsuit is not about the quality or value of care Halifax Health provided. This lawsuit is not about cheating Medicare.
This lawsuit is about a narrow dispute the government has over employed physician contracts and the method we used to compensate these mission-critical cancer specialists and brain and spinal surgeons.
The contracts, which had internal and external legal reviews, were created to retain mission-critical doctors in our community to provide for Level II Trauma service, Comprehensive Stroke Programs and cancer care for everyone regardless of their ability to pay.
The unreasonable sum being sought by the Federal Government would aggravate the challenges for our public safety net hospital which provides crucial around the clock trauma services and high volumes of uncompensated care to residents who otherwise would not have access to health services.
Please review the attached fact sheet and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions and suggestions on how we can educate the public. We need your support in this matter.
