West Nile Virus cases are being reported across the country

Friday, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Idaho reported their first West Nile Virus cases of the year. In New Jersey, a 55-year-old man was hospitalized, but said that he started feeling the symptoms of the West Nile Virus on August 5; the man reported doing gardening activities around that time near his home.
In Pennsylvania, two cases were reported after the victims tested positive for the West Nile Virus; one required hospitalization and one did not. Last year in Pennsylvania, the West Nile Virus was reported in 36 different counties. The state is seeing more widespread cases of the virus as opposed to a more centralized reporting.
Southwest Idaho has reported five cases of the West Nile Virus so far this season. A man in his 40s was from Washington County, another man in his 60s was from Owyhee County, and a woman in her 30s was infected in Payette County, according to KTVB.com.
New Jersey Health Commissioner Mary E. O’Dowd reported:
“Most human cases of West Nile virus typically appear from August through October, and residents should be careful to protect themselves by using insect repellant and staying inside during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.”
