Commissioners expected to approve $50K settlement for wrongfully arrested man
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. —City commissioners in Daytona Beach are expected to sign off on a $50,000 settlement for a man wrongly arrested.
Officers responding to a domestic violence call last September knocked on Samuel Scott’s door because they heard loud music.
It was not the unit identified in the 911 call. Scott opened the door but refused to step out, police said. When he took up a fighting stance, officers stunned him with a Taser, they said.
According to police, Scott put a choke hold on an officer. He was struck and sprayed with chemical spray. He then jumped out the window, breaking the glass with his head.
Scott wound up in the ocean but eventually gave up and was jailed for 40 days before being able to post bail.
The state attorney dropped all criminal charges saying police didn’t have the evidence to ask Scott to step out in the first place.
