Seems like the Department of Public Safety (Police & Fire) may be the only viable department performing at 100% for the citizens of Port Orange

Mr. Kisela, I just wanted to send you a note to say how grateful I am that we have men and women at the Port Orange Police Department that are willing to put their lives on the line at any second, under any circumstance, in an effort to protect our community. The events of this week are a perfect example of just how quickly their day can change and they can find themselves cast into a life and death situation. If memory serves me correct, it has been nearly 25 years since a police officer in Port Orange has had to shoot a suspect in the line of duty. Our officers this week found themselves face to face with an armed and violent suspect, who was willing to kill police officers, and possibly others! I hope that it never has to happen again, however I am confident we have some really brave and well trained men and women that when called upon will stand in the threshold of danger and protect the citizens of this community without hesitation. As a community it is easy to think “things like that don’t happen in Port Orange.” The reality is that incidents like this happen on streets all over our country. There is no magic wall around the City of Port Orange that keeps criminals out of our city. This should be a reminder that we should not need tragic events or special anniversaries of disasters to prompt ourselves to thank the men and women who serve in our Police and Fire Department. We should be doing that at every opportunity we get! May God bless our public servants that put their lives on the line for us every day and night! Scott Stiltner
