3 teens charged with murder in Deltona dragging death
DELTONA, Fla. —Three teenagers, ages 16, 17 and 18, are charged with third-degree murder in a drug ripoff that ended in the dragging death of Tristan DeJoy, deputies said.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, one of the suspects has been arrested, but they are still searching for the others.
Deputies said on April 28, the three accused teenagers went to DeJoy’s home to buy an ounce of marijuana. DeJoy handed over the drugs, when the driver, 18-year-old Dempsey Hadley, began to drive away without paying, authorities said.
DeJoy clung to the window of the pickup truck as it accelerated, when one of the passengers pushed him off.
DeJoy was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where he was pronounced dead from blunt-force injuries and skull fractures.
Deputies were able to track down the suspects after finding a call between DeJoy and Hadley moments before the confrontation, as well as surveillance video from the area showing the truck.
Raekwon Watts, 17, of DeLand, and Cole Kifner, 16, were arrested Thursday.
