PORT ORANGE, Fla. —A local couple was hit by a motorist in Port Orange Friday night and just left in the street.
Police said the driver took off.
Dean Warmkessel, 66, and his wife Donna were trying to cross Oakland Park Boulevard at Newton Road just after 6 p.m. when the hit-and-run driver came up from behind, slammed into them and fled, police said.
No one witnessed the crash, but neighbors heard it and came running, including Kevin Snyder, who called 911.
“I heard a car screech. I came outside to see what it was and then I seen that their was a man laying on the ground bleeding and same with the woman but she was standing,” Snyder said.
Mr. Warmkessel was taken to the hospital as a trauma alert and is being treated in the intensive care unit. His wife had non-life-threatening injuries.
Police only know the suspect vehicle had a loud muffler and is missing an antenna, found at the scene.
