Port Orange Water Plant Receives State Excellence Award
Port Orange, FL – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) just announced that Port Orange’s Garnsey Water Treatment Plant will receive the department’s 2013 Plant Operations Excellence Award. The award is in recognition of outstanding treatment plant operation, maintenance, and compliance.
“Winning the FDEP Plant Operations Excellence Award for Large Water Plants shows our customers that we are dedicated to providing clean, safe and reliable drinking water,” said Public Utilities Director Jason Yarborough. “I want to thank Operations, Maintenance and Lab staff for their commitment to excellence and bringing this prestigious state award home to Port Orange.”
Dr. Bonnie J. Sorensen, Director, Florida Department of Health Volusia County, stated “Drinking water supplies in the United States are among the safest in the world. It is extremely important for water treatment plants to be in compliance with all rules and regulations regarding water safety. We are delighted that the Port Orange Water Treatment Plant is being recognized by the state for excellence. We encourage them to keep up the good work.”
According to the Volusia County Health Department, Port Orange’s water system is the first and only one in Volusia County to receive the State Plant Operations Excellence Award in the large system category (+50,000 persons).
Garnering Florida’s top award is a major accomplishment for the Public Utilities Department, and one that started at the county level. Continual improvements at the plant and treating the water to a high level of water safety and allowed the facility to win the county and the regional competition and thus move onto the state level where the plant earned the top award! Along the way, the Garnsey Water Plant also won the best Consumer Confidence Award for Volusia County and placed in best tasting water competitions.
The actual award presentation will take place on March 5, 2014, in Ocala during the Florida Rural Water Association seminar called Focus on Change. For information, call 386-506-5751.
