Vehicular Homicide (Dunlawton & Yorktown)
UPDATE- regarding the double traffic fatality that occurred on October 27, 2013 at the intersection of Dunlawton Avenue and Yorktown Boulevard in Port Orange, where Port Orange residents Teresa C. Shinaver (born in 1955) and her husband James H. Shinaver (born in 1943), were both killed as a result of a traffic crash involving Patrick Ryan Shea (05/04/1981) of Daytona Beach.
The Port Orange Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit has been actively investigating this traffic fatality since the date of crash. The investigation revealed that Teresa C. Shinaver was driving a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder with James H. Shinaver as her front seat passenger. T. Shinaver was stopped for the red traffic signal northbound on Yorktown Boulevard at the intersection of Dunlawton Avenue. Patrick Ryan Shea was operating a 2013 BMW X5 traveling west bound on Dunlawton Avenue. P. Shea had two passengers inside his vehicle: (front seat passenger Michael Shea and left rear passenger Timothy Alderson). As the traffic signal turned green for T. Shinaver, she proceeded to cross Dunlawton Avenue northbound. Witnesses observed P. Shea’s vehicle traveling west bound on Dunlawton Avenue at a high rate of speed and subsequently fail to stop for the red traffic signal at Yorktown Boulevard. P. Shea’s vehicle violently collided into the passenger side of T. Shinaver’s vehicle. This collision caused T. Shinaver’s vehicle to overturn and continue traveling in a westerly direction subsequently striking the curb, a traffic signal control box and sidewalk light located on the NW corner of the intersection. Both vehicles were totaled as a result of the crash. Both T. Shinaver and J. Shinaver were pronounced deceased at the scene. Both of P. Shea’s passengers sustained injures as a result of the crash and were transported to the hospital. P. Shea was also transported to the hospital.
Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer Joshua Eddy determined through his investigation P. Shea was traveling just under 75 miles per hour at the time of crash. Additionally, after executing a search warrant obtaining a blood specimen from P. Shea, the investigation determined P. Shea was operating his vehicle with an unlawful blood alcohol concentration. On April 16, 2014, Judge Marriott signed an arrest warrant for Patrick Ryan Shea for the following charges:
• Two counts of DUI Manslaughter
• Two counts of Vehicular Homicide
• Two counts of DUI with injury/property damage
P. Shea’s bond for the above charges was set at $81,000. On April 17, 2014 at 10:26 am, Patrick Ryan Shea turned himself into the Volusia County Branch Jail for processing on the above charges.
