Hank is part of the group that starts trouble

–

From a reader to Hank:
reading some of your postings, I thought u had more objectivity. sounds like u want to be part of a group that wants to create chaos in a city I really care about, also a 32 year resident. SHAME ON YOU.— B.R.

From Hank to B.R.  Thank you for letting me know how you feel. I take this opportunity to respond.  I feel I am being objective about the negative findings in Port Orange since Ken Parker left.
  1.  Millions of dollars lost in finance because the correct water bills were not sent to Daytona Beach Shores.
  2.  City employees taking vacation time, not recorded, and then putting in for financial reimbursement for vacation not taken.
  3.  Millions of dollars lost due to not billing Halifax Paving for dirt removed from city property.
  4.  Changing computer statistics to cover up lost money.
  5.  Not billing for over a year, franchise permit money owed by a towing company, and money owed by an advertisement company for use of a billboard within the city.
  6.  Lack of transparency by city managers and Mayor Green.
    1.  Purchase of Lohman Funeral Home at a price twice its worth.
    2. Not informing city council of a pending financial deal between city manager and finance director, regarding benefits not normally available to any city employee.
    3.  Mayor Green saying on TV that people who want to keep taxes down are “not good citizens”.
    4.  The mishandling of the Riverwalk project, and millions of dollars, of yours and mine, to wind up with a split up park, and three 17 story condos right in the middle. You and I will pay to keep the split park in good maintenance for the benefit of the developer who is building the condos.  Now the developer wants 10 million dollars from the city.
There is much more, but at the top of my head, the foregoing comes to my mind.
I retired to Port Orange in 1994 and I like Port Orange, but do not like the way our city government has not been keeping the candy store.  In 2002 I started a web site, www.portorangeimages.com and I showed case this wonderful city with hundreds of photos taken around the city.
I am part of the group which wants reform in city government, and I am proud of it.  I have nothing to be ashamed about, but on the other hand I know of quite a few Port Orange administrators who should be ashamed of failing at their jobs for the citizens.
I am glad you told me your true thoughts.  I will be frank and honest with you.
Some years ago in e mails to me, you seem to side with me about my displeasure about a certain person on the city council. But you did not want your opinions posted on my web site. Fair enough and I honored that.  But I got quite concerned with your alleged honesty with me, when you showed up at my house one morning around 7 am, frantic that I had posted your e mail showing displeasure at the same city council person who I was displeased about.  Getting up from bed to see how I could have made that mistake on my computer, I found that I had not posted your e mail, but I had honestly replied to you in an e mail, and when you saw your original message, you made the wrong assumption that it was being copied in the e mail to you, from my web site.
No problem. I understand the need for some with anonymity. But since you doubt my objectivity, let me be honest and tell you that I doubt your sincerity in opening up an e mail dialogue with me about a certain person on the city council, and now you show your subjectivity to me, in defending all the malfeasance and mistakes made by inept administrators and that certain person on the city council.
I hope I sound objective to you.  I have very little to boast about, but in my heart I know how honest and objective I try to be.  I am sorry that you have not seen that part of me.  At the ripe old age of 77 yrs., I hope I can be remembered as being truthful, objective and honest.
I am starting to hear from supporters of city hall, and it seems from them that there is no need for reform in city hall, and losing millions of dollars of tax payers’ money is no big deal, and the people who might be responsible for malfeasance are only good people who made honest mistakes.  I do not see it that way.
Years ago, a city council man came to my house and we talked about my growing displeasure of the lack of transparency in city hall, and I asked him if a certain person on the city council had sent him to talk to me.  I have to take his word for it, when he told me that no, Mayor Green did not send him to talk to me.
And so I ask you, are you supporting Mayor Green in all the bad publicity that he is getting at this time?
I cannot imagine how you can blame a group for creating all this chaos in Port Orange.  Do you think they fabricated all the bad findings that are being revealed by their inquiries?  Are you against citizens watching their local government, and attempting to keep things going right?  You have told me that one of them has too much time on his hands and is a trouble maker.  To me it is so sad that you see democracy in work as you do.
I imagine if you have been close friends with those in city administration it might be difficult to be objective.  I do not have that problem.  Do you?
Thank you for telling me what is on your mind.  It is good to know and it gives me the opportunity to further explain my position on these issues.
Keep reading and keep writing to me.  This is all not over yet.  I guess you wish it would just go away and we can return to the good old days when we thought Parker had things under control
Sincerely Hank Springer

For evil to flourish, it only requires good men/women to do nothing.
Hank, you are a good man with intelligence.
