Video: Laney and Ford on what is wrong with Port Orange

Video: Laney and Ford respond to question from Ted Noftall
At the 10 10 14 Crane Lakes city council candidates’ forum Sonya Laney replies to the question:
Laney in effect deplores the constant criticism of city employees who have in the past made “honest mistakes”.  I would offer that perhaps not all of those mistakes were committed unknowingly and were the result of neglect and malfeasance. For sure, the taking of vacation time and then putting in for financial reimbursement for vacation not taken can be doubted as “honest mistakes”.
I think the negative criticism which has been leveled by some towards City Government leadership or lack of leadership has been earned by the leadership not providing a timely and clear reaction to past mistakes. Whether Laney wants to call proaction or reaction does not make any difference to me as long as leadership responds to correct all those so called “honest” mistakes. And those “honest” mistakes have caused the tax payers money lost.
The so called transition period, which the city may still be in, involves a failed prior new city manager who was given the task of fixing his former city manager’s mistakes, and such leadership was not provided, causing the need to keep criticizing the city leadership.
We may still be in a transition period, in which we have an interim city manager.
And so, I am not impressed with Sonya Laney pleading to stop the negative criticism.  Such a distaste of negative criticism by Ms. Laney seems to me to be a plea to stop laying blame on city administrators which should spill over to  Mayor Green who has been around a long time while all these “honest mistakes” have been going on.
Green supports Ms. Laney and Laney’s main purpose seems to me is to infer that many of the present city problems and tensions are result of Ford’s four years as city councilman.  That is pure nonsense in my observation. But there is in my mind a reason to suspect that Ford did not approve of Kisela’s work as a city manager, but Green found no reason to expect Kisela to do better on reforming the culture of leadership in city government.  If one finds no reason to inquire how Green allowed the culture of city government to be so lax as to allow millions of dollars mistakes than one should vote for Laney, because she too finds no reason to blame people, especially not Green, but does infer city problems stem from four years of Bob Ford.  Laney’s plea to stop criticizing when mistakes are still happening say to me, please let’s keep the legacy of Mayor Green as our hero who has brought all the construction projects (and flooding and traffic) to the city of Port Orange.  It is my observation that Laney is only running for city council to stop negative criticism of “honest past mistakes” which may spill over on Green.
Laney tells us to pick up the pieces and move on. That sounds good to me, but she qualifies that mistakes will happen and we should expect more in the future. Indeed mistakes will happen and that is why in the future we need good leadership to catch them before or as they are happening and to take remedial action.  I do not see Laney telling us how that can be done.  On the other hand, Ford speaks to “accountability” which Laney has in the past confused with harassment.
Laney says that blaming people is irrelevant to the problems.  I suggest that such an attitude within city government brought us to the present tensions which we have in the city of Port Orange.
Laney says that no one in city government has been ripping off the citizens.  Nevertheless I note that citizens’ tax money has been lost and wasted and we are told by Laney to expect more “honest mistakes” and her main supporter Mayor Green has told the citizens to expect more flooding damage to their homes.
I am convinced that a vote for Laney will be a vote for more of the same for the taxpayers (investors?) of Port Orange.
Sincerely- hank springer

When given the opportunity with my question why didn’t Ms. Laney proudly stand behind her recent attack ad clearly implying that 2010 was better than 2014.
Why did she fudge and dodge and obfuscate the truth. Why didn’t she proudly state that 2010 was indeed better for her mentor Mayor Green and his co-opted Manager who thrived on keeping one problem after another hidden from Council and the people they represent. Why didn’t she simply tell us that she is Green’s protégé and what works for Green will work for her.
The truth of 2010 was that all of the problems that began surfacing in 2012 with the firing of the Public Works director had been occurring for years including the water billing errors with the Shores, the zero-read meters, and the system wide collapse of internal controls. The only thing working well in 2010 was the cover-up and even that facade had begun to crack.
Ms. Laney stated that she is knowledgeable regarding these matters because she has read all of the minutes of all of the meetings and if that is the case that would be a good thing because she darn well was not in attendance at any of those meetings. In fact as regards the Audit and Budget Advisory Board that she was appointed to by Mayor Green, And that I chaired – she only attended 9 complete meetings out of 14 for a dismal attendance record of only 64% on a board dealing with material at which she purports to be an expert. .
A vote for Ms. Laney is a vote for Mayor Green, and that is a vote none of us can afford.

I don’t know if we can all survive two more year under Green’s regime.
The only saving grace will be 3 – 2 votes possibly.

The only thing wrong with Port Orange will be Sonya if she get’s in. She seems to be OK with major mistakes happening and then the ensuing cover ups. I still don’t know where she stands, all she ever talks about is her being a CPA and accountability. When employees are held accountable she claims they are being harassed. Wonder what she thinks of the PW director resigning?

She says NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE. Just the same old rhetoric over and over and over and over. We need her on the council like we need a hole in the head.

I was thinking the same thing. I have heard her speak a couple of times now, but I do not recall her ever taking a stance on anything. Would be nice to hear speak about her platform, if she has one, and what exactly she believes needs to be done to repair our City. Rhetoric will not help Port Orange get through this muddy times.

It is scarey to think, but this will indeed be a close election and and epic battle.
Ms. Laney clearly won the primary. She has more support in the three districts outside of Bob Ford’s District 1. Being an incumbent and having served through the turmoil does not help Bob.
Time to take off the gloves, only three weeks left til Election Day. We are doomed if this woman gains elected office. She is indeed a candidate of the power brokers and Mr Ford is the candidate for the common Port Orange citizen.

At a recent fundraiser for Sonya the Mayor said she was “his girl.” I wonder why he would say that. Doesn’t he know how ethical she is, Wink Wink.

Larry McKinney withdraws from November run-off for district 4 seat on Port Orange City Council
“Unfortunately, I anticipate moving out of District 4 within the next sixty days,” McKinney continued, adding, “In fact, just this past week, I had to miss both a Friday night debate, as well as the televised debate (on Port Orange government access Brighthouse cable channel) at City Hall for business meetings out of town. In fairness to the citizens, and to my opponent, Scott Stiltner, it is only appropriate to withdraw sooner rather than later.”

Sonya Laney is the real conspiracy theorist in this election……some how she and her supporters propose that Bob Ford is responsible for everything that has gone wrong in Port Orange for the last 25 years. Certainly in the last 4. Fascinating how Bob would be pulling that off since he is often on the wrong side of the vote from the Mayor. Can you ‘splain that one to me please? He is one of 5 votes.
This Mayor always prevails on issues where he must… 3/2 …cha ching….Allen Green wins. Again. And really always. Check it out.
The true constant in this city’s government is Allen Green. In office in one form or another for 30 years. Mayor for the last 14 with 2 more to go. And of course Ken Parker was there for 28 years with his years of mismanagement and refusal or inability to hold anyone accountable. Promptly followed by another master of mismanagement and scandal, Greg Kisela. Now thankfully both are gone. Under duress. Duress of their own making.
If you are not happy with what has been uncovered and still continues to be…and will be…. until we do a top to bottom review of this city and install real internal controls…… you need to look to Allen Green, Ken Parker and Greg Kisela. Not Bob Ford…..Bob is trying to remove the cancer..not throw another band aid on it…. ….and want to review the most recent screw up…see the failure of the flood mitigation project and closure of Dunlawton on 9/24/14….read the Interim CM’s report for the truth…human failure, no protocols followed, upper management clueless. That ain’t Bob Ford’s fault. That is failure on the part of the previous very well paid city manager. …Read David Harden’s damning report. David Harden, a man of honor. Read what the NJ has to say. None of its good from a historical perspective for this city.
No Sonya, things were not great in 2010…we just did not know what was to come. Let’s hope we never go back to the way things were in 2010.
No..here is the truth….Bob was on council when the terrible truth began to come out in the Fall of 2012….. and he began asking hard questions about what was going on…..what had gone on….how we got to this mess….and insisting there to be competence, transparency and accountability in this city. And that we not just slide remedies through on the “consent agenda” anymore…..how this city has fixed screw ups for decades. ..Its known…..its just what we did here…..it was the city’s culture. We wanted to look good no matter what. And uncovering that method of “the fix” now looks really bad for Allen Green, the man who presided over most of these mistakes. Hence the panic to shut Bob up and those of us who have begun to watch what is going on and ask questions.
Having said all that… you Gerbil, and others like you are really working this line of BS…..and Mayor Allen Green and Sonya Laney, his God daughter and “his girl” are really pushing it …and amazingly some folks are buying it. Hope they know what they and we are in for should Laney win……more of the same that we have gotten from Allen Green for decades. Want real change? Return Bob Ford to office and vote for Scott Stiltner. Then we will have accountability and a government that finally works. And government in the Sunshine. Wow..what a concept.

    please stuff it sonya

Sonya claims to have grown up in the construction business, therefore an expert, Sonya claims she has a CPA, therefore she is an expert in accounting. What she refuses to claim that she is Mayor Green’s , God daughter, his little lackey and his major butt kisser. Sonya claims she is ethical…..I don’t think so.

Chief Bob Ford is a passionate and honorable man who fights for the citizens no matter what. Sonya makes excuses and aides the cover ups and deception that has finally surfaced in the past few years. Please don’t blame Mr Ford for demanding explanations and accountability. This man is a true leader.
