Why do you think Port Orange cannot find and retain any decent administrators? Why do you think so many people are looking to leave Port Orange to go to other municipalities and organizations? Why do any decent young employees use Port Orange as a training ground and move on as soon as they become valuable to the organization? Why is Port Orange loosing all of its institutional knowledge? Why does Port Orange city officials and city administrators treat their long term employees with such utter disrespect? Why does Port Orange administrative management care less about succesorship planning? When Port Orange did an employee climate study and found that the employee morale was in the pits why did Port Orange city officials and administrative management do nothing to improve this? Why are long term employees desperately seeking an exit plan to retire earlier in spite of their previous commitment to their work? Are administrators turning down six figure jobs in Port Orange because the word is out there that Port Orange is not a safe place to risk a career with?
Port Orange spent the last 25 years not properly managing their budget and investments then when trouble hit they went after employee pay and benefits to cover their losses. The climate study showed you the result by measure of morale and the pay study shows you the result by measure of dollars and cents. The remainder is shown through resignations and poor recruiting ability.
If you were to put together a seminar on how to handle budget issues and employee morale Port Orange is a text book example of how NOT to navigate rough seas. The Titanic was better managed.
I find it intriguing that many are applying for the vacant director positions, being selected then turning down the job offer. This is very telling.
I find it telling that aside from income derived from businesses and real estate taxes the biggest money maker for the city is income from utilities. Yet they are virtually ignored as a major source of income for the city and are treated shabbily when it comes to importance of their profession.
I know for a fact that most of the employees in these departments are long, long, long term with tons of institutional knowledge who are ready to retire soon or could retire now.
What will happen to our city when they are all gone and can’t be replaced because of the low pay offered for licensed operators who are responsible for the health of our city and who have to answer to the Department of Health and many other regulatory authorities and are legally responsible to these authorities for their job performance?
