Council approves hike in fees to drive on Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. —It will soon cost more to drive on the sand around Daytona Beach.
VOLUSIA COUNTY COUNCIL VOTES TO RAISE BEACH-DRIVING TOLLS
Beginning Feb. 1, daily beach-driving passes will increase from $5 to $10, and season passes from $20 to $25.
The Volusia County Council agreed Thursday to increase beach access for the first time in almost 20 years. Beginning Feb. 1, it will cost $10 for a daily access pass to drive on the beach. Annual passes for residents will rise from $20 to $25 while the costs for nonresident passes will increase from $40 to $100.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports the toll increase is the first one since 1996. The increase will help cover the costs associated with such things as beach cleanup and lifeguards. The increased tolls will account for about a quarter of the county’s $10.7 million beach budget.
