During a Special Meeting held on Saturday, July 11, 2015, the Port Orange City Council selected Michael H. “Jake” Johansson as its new city manager. Mr. Johansson was selected from an initial field of 89 candidates.
A recently retired Navy Captain, Mr. Johansson last served as the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Naval Support Activity, Hampton Roads, Virginia. Mr. Johansson’s distinguished military service also includes serving as the Operations and Readiness Officer, Commander Naval Air Forces, Coronado, California and as Commanding Officer and Executive Officer, Patrol Squadron Four, Kaneohe, Hawaii. Mr. Johansson also spent three years in the White House as a Naval Aide to Vice President Cheney. Mr. Johansson’s educational background includes a Masters of Public Administration and Bachelor of Applied Science, Resource Management, and extensive training from U.S. Navy Leadership Schools.
The City Council is scheduled to formally approve a contract at a Special Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Mr. Johansson is expected to begin work mid-August, at which time he will have approximately two weeks of transition time with Interim City Manager David Harden. The City of Port Orange extends a warm welcome to Mr. Johansson, his wife and three young sons.
