Crystal Pifer fled an abusive boyfriend | She went back | Now she's dead
.
Before authorities found Crystal Pifer’s body floating in the Halifax River on Wednesday, the woman fled her boyfriend’s boat because he was beating her up, a South Daytona Police Department incident report states.
The 28-year-old woman jumped on someone else’s boat seeking help but later returned to her boyfriend’s vessel, the report states.
Eight hours later, Pifer’s body was discovered near the Seven Seas Marina in the 3300 block of South Peninsula Drive. Police said they are investigating the “suspicious death.”
After learning of the boat-jumping incident, beach patrol unsuccessfully tried to find Pifer’s boat. At one point, a police officer saw the boat and could hear people arguing.
Her boyfriend first reported her drowning a little after midnight on Wednesday and said Pifer was a good swimmer.
He did not immediately appear for his police interview, the report states.
It’s unclear what crimes, if any, were committed.
Pifer is survived by her family and a 10-year-old son, according to her mother.
