Are Tent Caterpillars Moving into Port Orange?
The below images were taken yesterday (Thursday) on Spruce Creek Road across the street from the Park I have not seen these nasty critters in this area since I moved here from the Northeast 20 years ago. These little suckers can completely defoliate a tree within one or two weeks. If a tree is defoliated at this time of year it can go into shock and die back
These images were taken opposite the Park but from the road I notice some of these tents in the top of some trees within the park, near the firehouse. These critters spread fast from tree to tree.
Hopefully, the city can take some action soon. City DPW & Parks staff should be trained to spot these type of infestations.

I saw a small tent on a limb on a tree right outside my summer trees property. It is no longer there. I remember the devestation we had on our trees because of these critters when I lived up on L.I.
If you ask Mayor Greene he will tell you that you are a critter from up north who causes devestation.
Hank,
Are you referring to the gypsy moth caterpillars? I recall them causing devastation in the Northeast. I have never seen them since retiring to Florida. I hope not too either. I recall them dropping out of the trees like leaves on a fall day. After they ate all the leaves of course.
yes, maybe they were called the gypsy moth catapillars. they did a lot of damage and looked ugly in the trees.
