Organizational Communication and Transparency

How do projects assist with organizational internal communication processes?
The communication aspects of project deliverables are involved from two perspectives:

  • •Engaging the required stakeholders to collaborate in creating the project and commence gaining buy-in;
  • •How to communicate the implementation of the project effectively as it often crosses over numerous areas of the organization – to ensure that people know:
  • •What is on the way and why
  • •How it will benefit them
  • •What they need to do to be involved and achieve the best out of it

Organizational communications inadvertently improve by the way the project is communicated and implemented, though the focus on the communication is to ensure successful implementation of the project via change management techniques.
Lack of transparency, honesty, integrity and communication within the leadership team and what problems this can create within the wider organization.
Being transparent, honest and acting with integrity is central to being a strong leader.
If the leadership team is behaving against this code among each other, the behavior displayed will be mirrored throughout the organization. If our behavior lacks honesty, integrity and transparency, then we are giving everyone within the organization permission to behave in the same way.
Further, too little communication and obfuscation can evoke fear. There are situations where the actual project implementation is highly positive and warmly embraced by others – however, if one team does not feel they have been provided the same transparency or communication as the other teams, they will develop a negative sentiment towards the change and be fearful of it.
It is important to communicate in such a way that people feel like they have a sense of control and understanding over what is happening to their environment.
Sorry, but strategic communication, propaganda, and disingenuous rhetoric does not work because anyone with one ounce of integrity can see right through it.

    regarding http://www.leathersmilligan.com/narcissism-and-toxic-leaders/#
more bull shit about how to be a leader. produced by a guy with a title and rank, who does not appreciate that most people out there are asses. most of the academics feed us nothing but alice in wonderland principles while diabolically knowing that the real worldl does not work that way. It is the kind of bull shit which has enflamed the middle east, by removing so called “toxic leaders” who had situations under control.
The academic world is insulated from reality and is always telling us how nice things would be if only if. The academic world still wants us to believe that principles still matter, while the candy store of tax payers is being raided by compromises and concensus building. The truth is that the golden rule never really applied to everyone, and for sure now it doesn’t apply to anyone. It now is “every man for himself” and all the golden rule adovcates don’t live among us in the real world.
These golden rule advocates think that road rage starts in traffic and can’t imagine that it starts with anxiety and frustration, fed upon by academics, politicians, lobbyists, chamber of commerce, power, influence, greed, who want you (us) to live by the golden principles that perhaps your leader is toxic.
So what if he is toxic, is he getting the job done? This is important, because we are all drowning in a lack of leadership and looking for the golden rule principle upholder is just more swallowing of the crap which is drowning us all. Now don’t be offended. I’m just saying…..
I wished we had some toxic leadership in the proud city of Port Orange. maybe some accontability would be included even if it does provoke a “hostile working environment”. hank

So what exactly are you saying Hank? Are you saying that you like Jake and his shutting down of the read file? Are you saying you like the idea of him trying to stop citizen participation at council meetings and his trying to shut Ted Noftall and the Gardners down? Are you saying that you like him and his personally vetted yes men administrators threatening employees against communicating with city council and citizen activists? Are you saying you support him in trying to make end runs around council and pandering to special interest? Are you saying if he maintains stability and control over the organization through propaganda, rhetoric, and intimidation this is ok with you? If this is what I think you are saying then you are either going senile or you have turned to the dark side.

Toxic leaders and get positive things done or negative things. Toxic leaders can be a devil or a force for good. There has to be a sense of get it done or else, and if you want to name that toxic, so be it. Accountability is usually avoided unless a strong leader imposes his will on the ones who should be held accountable.
I am not an admirer of the Admiral, but notice , that he is getting is devilish things accomplished, even though he may be toxic. Look at it this way. A slave driver with a whip is whipping the hell out of the oarsman to get that boat going. Morale is very low, but the boat is moving. You can’t make an omelet without breaking heads, eggs, and all the academics in the world can call foul on such a toxic leader, but if you want leaders, look for some poison in them. Piss and vinegar is what i would rather call it. We have a lot of piss and vinegar around our local elected leaders, but its not for the people. Its for the team captain, who himself is a very toxic person. Allen has the personality to get what he wants. His son may or may not have been cloned from Allen. I don’t want to find out about his son. being toxic is not the problem. And in the military if you want someone to go get killed when ordered, come on give me a break. Toxic? it’s true. not only people can’t handle the truth, they don’t want to know the truth. If you want to configure humans to be nice people in an alice and wonderland fairy tale, you will be disappointed and dismayed in old age, as I am.

There is nothing wrong with being a tough and demanding boss as long as you recognize value, get tough on the people that need it, and reward those individuals that are really getting it done. Your analogy of the middle east” AKA Saddam Hussain” and the void created in Iraq is a poor analogy of the need for a toxic leader in our homeland in order to get things done. We are a long standing democracy with a civilian population that treasure their first amendment rights and the bill of rights.
What you need to get things done in Port Orange is the elimination of special interest and the solidification and augmentation of transparency and open governance. More grass roots interest and participation by citizens and more informed voting citizens do not want a militaristic toxic leader that shuts down transparency and moves the ball down the field rapidly without their participation. Toxic leaders do not fair well in an an environment of transparency where they have to partner with the people around them, build consensus, and sometimes relinquish some of the control that they obsessively relish.
Enlightened leaders truly represent the interests of the citizens that are the voting constituency and do not as their first line of business eradicate transparency and institute strategic communication. Our elected officials reluctantly selected Johannsson because of their indolence and lack of will to dismantle special interest and truly vet a manager that would represent a fresh new managerial paradigm that is a hybrid between private and public sector management with a strong emphasis on transparency and open governance. Because of their indolence and lack of resolve they got the complete opposite.
Part of the reason for this is that they did not clearly define the managerial paradigm that the citizens wanted to transition to, they did not stipulate this in the vetting process, and they allowed city administrators with a vested interest to preserve the existing paradigm to be in charge of the search and vetting process. The only one that consistently. thoroughly, and indomitably seems to understand this is Mr. Ted Noftall, and hopefully he will be elected as our next mayor. If someone is also elected from district three with a supportive mindset of what Mr. Noftall will stand for, in time we citizens can root out this kind of special interest and toxic management. This may require the reserve of the new council at some point in time to pass new resolutions to modify the city charter and divest the city manager of about 50% of his charter power.
It would also be beneficial to hybridize our system of government into a 50/50 power split between the council and the manager with dedicated city commissioners having more oversight and quasi-administrative power over the city departments.. You may have to pay the mayor and the council members a little more for their additional time and responsibilities but it would be well worth it and at least you would have the checks and balances to keep a tyrannical I.C.M.A. city manager from building his administrative dynasty, pander to special interest, and abuse any employee that does not pound the party. Then the citizens will not have to watch POC TV council meetings and watch the city manager leading our elected officials around like they have rings in their noses and wonder what special interest is behind the unlimited charter power that the city manager wields. Once an I.C.M.A. type manager knows he has the council members he needs to neuter buffaloed with their hands tied by the city charter and the Florida Sunshine Laws then the true tyrannical power is then ramped up and its special interest politics running the city instead of the elected officials and their constituency.

Someone on this site has suggested that Manager Johansson’s “Port Orange Pride” campaign should more appropriately be called “Port Orange Hide.” His love of secrecy and of non-answer answers says more about hidden agendas than pride in accomplishments. If he is proud of what he’s doing then why not welcome openness and transparency?
On January 15th of this year someoone asked Mr Johansson for some simple information:
“I think we are approaching the end of the 24-month interim amendment to the Riverboat/Restaurant MDA. The project timeline shows January, 2016 as the month for approval of construction plans for the subdivision and for approval of a building permit for the restaurant. I also recall that 18 months into the agreement an extra five feet of right-of-way either side of Halifax Drive was to be dedicated to the City. Any updates? Also, where does this leave the status of the current dirt parking lot at the Riverboat and Marina?”
    His non-answer was:
“I meet with Mr. LaCour on the 20th of this month and will provide an update after our meeting.”
Of course no updates were forthcoming; and, now we are presented with yet another agreement between the City and Buddy LaCour where the City gives Buddy everything he wants and begs him to please, please do something you said you would. The deal is done and all that remains is for Council to make the right noises from the dais and give it their seal of approval. Their seal of approval and the taxpayers dollars, that is. We don’t even need a meeting–just replay the last one we had two years ago and save some time. Buddy says “jump” and Council starts hopping.
Ten days ago Ted Noftall asked Mr Johansson for some simple information:
“Would you take a few minutes and provide an overview as to the mold / air quality testing going on at the Public Works facility on Virginia Ave.”
    His non-answer was:
“I believe you have received the Air quality assessment as part of your Public Information Request that answers your questions.”
Gotta wonder what’s going on here. I suppose we’ll find out when it comes before Council for their rubber stamp, gloss of legality, seal of approval. In the meantime–Port Orange Hide, Hide, Hide………………

My apologies for the above post appearing as Anonymous instead of under my own name. An oversight. Neither Manager Johansson nor Council are in my chain of command so, unlike some City employees, I am not afraid of attaching my name to my posts. I do, however, wonder why some of Jake’s supporters are afraid of attaching theirs? Fear of the brown-nosing label, boys and girls?

Mike. Don’t you get it? Anonymous is really me, setting up a scam dialogue, to make whatever side I wish to put in a bad light. Sometimes city hall advocates look good in their arguments, and some times anti city hall advocates look good with their arguments. Do you think I am the only one in the USA spreading anxiety and frustration? — hank

I can’t figure what Council is thinking or doing.
Have they become content to receive information critical of City operations not from their super secretive Manager but through the blogs, OR ARE THEY
Receiving and resolving negative information in private communications with the Manager and not disclosing same to the people they were elected to represent ??
Neither of these scenarios is acceptable and I would encourage Council to insist that Manager Johansson start conducting Port Orange government in an open and transparent fashion.

You people are a piece of work. Jake was great and would be good for the City when he got here now because he doesn’t tow the lunatics line, he’s useless. Bottom line is no one will make some of you happy, no matter who they are or what they do, unless they do exactly what you want. You won’t go away, so best thing to do is ignore you all. Par for the course.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK JAKE, you’re doing something right, because the Hanks, Teds, Mikes and their hand full of malcontent buddies aren’t happy.

I think you have forgotten that leading up to their final deliberations all five council members were extremely reluctant to hire Jake and felt that none of the existing candidates were right for Port Orange. They finally lamented to select him rather than go back for another round of vetting a new group of applicants responding to an ill defined managerial paradigm. When you do not learn from the past, and you cannot define the changes that you want, then you get more of the same thing.
What is the good job that you are telling Jake to keep up? Is it shutting down the read file? Is it attempting to eradicate citizen participation at council meetings? Is it proposing resolutions that give him unlimited spending authority where he can circumvent the council’s will and backdoor expensive consultation services through piggy back agreements that do not require council approval. Is it blowing off Ted Noftall and other concerned citizen’s information requests and questions about how the public’s interest is being managed. Is it his ability to insulate certain members of his administrative management team from scrutiny and exposure of their incompetence? Is it his ability to divest as many civilian private citizens and employees of their first amendment rights while promoting his Port Orange hide campaign/
We are all waiting with baited breath to hear your metrical analysis of his all hands on deck bang up job he has been doing. Please share with us malefactor long term civilian citizens and employees all the great things he has been doing for us My guess is that you are either a contractor, a real estate developer, or maybe a mortgage broker who is probably an officer in the Chamber of Commerce.

Listen to the same old Ted like a broken record over and over and over and over and over. With his same old tired rhetoric and conspiracy thoeries. YAWN Im glad I have a mute button so I don’t have to hear that voice each week whining away with his condescending tone and Canadian accent.

Anonymous, glad that you understand that I am not happy. In regards to whomever posted “Sorry, but strategic communication, propaganda, and disingenuous rhetoric does not work because anyone with one ounce of integrity can see right through it.” I observe that such disingenuous rhetoric prompts people to search for the real truth. For those of us who malcontent and unhappy, use such lack of clear information to get people interested to pursue for themselves the quest for real truth. For instance: Who is Green’s best friend on cracker creek? Does developer Russel want his pole barn back from Summer Trees West, to use on the city/Russel land which right now only has a dock to nowhere, built by trust funds instituted for developers first, and then maybe the people after 17 story condos are built by the developer.
Don’t spell it out for the people. Let them too search for the answers that we malcontents already have, but are ignored because we are known as malcontents. Pass on the anxiety and frustration to all those who can’t seem to handle the truth.
There are reasons a lot more people are giving our local politics and national politics the middle finger.
