"It's Not Rocket Science"

Back in 2014, then-Councilman Dennis Kennedy used those words to describe the sorry state of grass mowing by the City of Port Orange and the frustrating inability of Public Works to get a private contractor hired for the job.  The Public Works director at the time, Mary Anderson, presented the following data to Council showing just how inefficient it was to have public employees performing this work when it could be done much cheaper by an outside contractor.
Contractor vs In-house

It wasn’t rocket science in 2014 and it’s not rocket science now–so why do we keep repeating the same mistakes over and over?  Every time the topic comes up at a Council meeting the unanimous consensus is that the City should NOT be in the lawn-mowing business yet Public Works had this crew taking care of edging along Dunlawton on Friday.  Not only were they edging but they were doing so with a Bobcat!  Right tool for the right job?

Two of the crew were even dropped off at the job site without their seatbelts buckled.  I know riding in the bed of a pickup is legal in Florida, but it’s enough to turn a risk manager’s hair grey.

Potentially some serious liability for taxpayers. Not something a private sector employer would support in terms of a company practice. Who is in charge here?

After all these years of screw ups in Public Works it looks like we may still have a bunch of retards running that operation.
Seeing those city employees hanging off the back of a moving city truck reminded me of the cast from the Dumb and Dumber movie.

Who was the rocket scientist in the city that decided to use a expensive piece of heavy equipment to edge the lawns on Dunlawton? It also appears to have torn up the edge of roadway in some areas
    Unbelievable

As far as company practice in the private sector is applied. Do sanitation workers not hang on to the back of the garbage trucks while they are in motion? For the question about rocket scientist, I do not think the city actually has rocket scientists on the pay roll. I would like to address stupid is stupid, you used the word retards, is this a site about name calling or is it a site about fixing problems? I am not sure if you are aware that the word is offensive or if you were just being emotional and forget it was an offensive word. Can we use this site to have an open honest place to discuss issues without being offensive and try to fix problems that occur in he city. You also refer to a movie called dumb and dumber. Please tell me how specifically it is related please. I think you just wanted to call someone dumb and not really explain yourself. On a lighter note, I hope everyone is having a wonderful week and has an even better weekend!!!
